My Beatbox Journey: Sudarshan BBX

Beatboxing has always been my way of channeling my thoughts, ideas and art. And as a beatboxer, it’s important to constantly learn and evolve with time, and that’s only possible by meeting fellow musicians, jamming with them and picking up new tips and tricks on the go whenever possible. In conclusion, I love beatbox.

Why the journey started

My beatboxing journey started 5 years ago through a couple of YouTube videos out of which a few prominent ones were that of Tom Thum, Berywam, Wawad, Tyla Dubya. As someone who tried learning instruments on multiple occasions and failed at sticking to it, beatbox stuck. It proved to be the best thing to compliment my fickle nature.

Beatbox really helped in expressing my creativity in ways that I had never even thought about before. It’s a superpower to be able to make music anytime and anywhere. And in my humble opinion Beatboxing will forever remain to be the single art form with the most amount of freedom to it than any other out there.

Where the journey started

My entry into the Bombay Beatbox Community started during the lockdown. Most of my connections started off via Instagram live sessions where a lot of beatboxers would join each other’s livestreams and jam with each other. This eventually led me to join my first ever cypher in Marol Art Village and start integrating myself into the Mumbai hip-hop scene. Although ever since I did join, I noticed a certain lack of meet-ups, conversations, events, etc.

And I finally debuted in Rawdust’s – ‘Battle of Beatboxers’ for my first solo offline battle where I ranked 8th in the eliminations and had to battle the legend Marvel beatbox as my first ever offline opponent.
Then went on to compete in the Bombay champs, IBF and a couple of college battles.

But sadly even after being from a city like Mumbai where hip-hop is so incredibly prominent, to no one’s fault, it lacks an active beatbox community. One that could really help nurture a ‘next generation’ of beatboxers. There was a lack of someone to provide them with the kind of opportunities or platform to really push themselves to better themselves.

Delhi Beatbox as a Mumbaikar?

So last year I ended up joining OP Jindal as a film student, through karma’s recommendation all the way back in October 2023 and moved to Sonipat in August 2024. This put me in close proximity to the Delhi Beatbox Community. And I must say, this is what you really call a beatbox family. Everyone is an absolute sweetheart and so very passionate about the art.

This city is the one with arguably the best battle scene in India. A ton of live events where the community’s beatboxers have showcased themselves incredibly. And so it was a no-brainer that being a part of this adorable family would be the best thing for me

I was honestly nervous at first but meeting the Delhi community and jamming with them has definitely been some of the best memories in my life. Especially attending the Delhi Beatbox Championship 2024 and watching everyone give their level best! Shoutout to PINT and Ronit for the incredible work.

Everyone has been more than welcoming to an ‘outsider’ like me and I couldn’t be happier about it.

Much love to DBC and all the lovely people here. Beatbox for life people, ESH!
